The region’s best Porsche one-make racers will converge on Sydney Motorsport Park next August when Australia hosts its first ever joint Porsche Carrera Cup event.
In a feast for Porsche one-make enthusiasts, Porsche Carrera Cup Australia will be joined by Porsche Carrera Cup Asia at V8 Supercars’ Sydney Motorsport Park SuperSprint event on August 26-28, 2016.
The historic occasion will be the first time the two championships race at the same event and also Carrera Cup Asia’s maiden round ‘Down Under’.
Both Carrera Cups will run the majority of the event separately, both rewarding points for the respective championships with individual races. However, the event will also feature a component that will pin the best of Carrera Cup Australia against Carrera Cup Asia’s stars, with race formats to be announced in the coming months.
Porsche Cars Australia Motorsport Manager, Kurt Sakzewski, is excited to welcome Porsche Carrera Cup Asia to the popular Sydney event.
“Combining the two championships has been a long time coming; the Carrera Cup formula is extremely strong in the Asia-Pacific region and it was only a matter of time before we joined forces for a combined Carrera Cup event,” said Sakzewski.
“As a global formula using identical 911 GT3 Cup race cars, joining Carrera Cup championships is something successfully achieved by other Porsche regions, predominantly in Europe. To bring this to Australia is an exciting prospect”
“I have no doubt the Carrera Cup Asia drivers and teams will enjoy the Australian motor racing culture and the unique atmosphere experienced at V8 Supercars events. We are committed to holding separate races to maintain each series’ integrity as part of the greater championship chase; however we also look forward to introducing a combined racing element which will certainly add to the spectacle.”
Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be just the second international Porsche one-make series to race in Australia; the first being Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in its 1999 appearance at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
Sydney’s combined Porsche Carrera Cup round will be the Australian championship’s second visit to Sydney Motorsport Park for the 2016 season following its headline role at the second ever Porsche Rennsport Australia event on April 29 to May 01.
