PORSCHE PAYCE Carrera Cup Australia stars have made a solid start to their respective Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup campaigns at the official series two-day test in Spain.
Reigning champion and Porsche junior Jaxon Evans – driving for FACH Auto Tech – was joined by Team Australia trio Joey Mawson, Stephen Grove and Marc Cini in the only official pre-season test, held at the Catalunya circuit near Barcelona.
Evans, who finished the test seventh fastest in the final session, and Mawson both lapped within a few tenths of the fastest time, while Grove and Cini proved competitive in the Pro-Am class throughout.
“It’s an interesting track,” Evans said.
“It’s fast and flowing but it also has some tight and twisty corners, so it’s a good mixture of both and it really tests you as a driver on track limits and how fast you can really carry some speeds.
“We made a lot of progress and learned with the team at FACH Auto Tech. The car looks fantastic and we are confident we are in a good place moving forward.”
FACH Auto Tech are the same team that former Porsche Junior and Australian champion Matt Campbell drove for throughout the 2017 season.
Mawson was an impressive sixth outright in the first testing session as the test opened and continued to show solid pace throughout the subsequent sessions.
With Evans seventh in the final session, Mawson was eighth – only 0.09s behind.
Turkish driver Ayhancan Güven set the fastest time of the test overall, lapping 0.2 seconds faster than the existing qualifying benchmark set by Michael Ammermüller last year.
Norwegian driver Roar Lindland topped the Pro-Am competition, Cini and Grove just outside the top three.
The opening round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will be held at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona on 10-12 May.
