Australian motor racing great Mark Skaife will have his second taste of Porsche action at Albert Park when he returns to the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia championship this weekend.
After an impressive debut in the category twelve months ago, Skaife has joined forces with L’Oréal Paris Men Expert to compete on the grid at the signature Melbourne event, the Formula 1™ Qantas Australian Grand Prix.
Skaife will race the Team L’Oréal Porsche among a field of high-profile racers, including event drawcard, former F1 ace Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
“I’m really looking forward to racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup again this year and I’m confident we can challenge for race wins this time around,” said Skaife.
“There is some serious pedigree in the field this year – there are guys who are absolute specialists in these cars like Craig Baird and Alex Davison, Jonny Reid and Daniel Gaunt who were very competitive during last year’s championship, Heinz-Harald Frentzen who we know is an ex-Formula 1 winner and a whole host of good young guys coming through the ranks, so it should be a really enjoyable contest.
“It’s great also to have L’Oréal Men Expert on board again for the 2012 event, and if the car goes as good as it looks then we should be in for a great weekend.”
At the opening round of the 2011 Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia season, Skaife impressed on debut in the Porsche championship by finishing in second position in the opening race at Albert Park, followed by two fourth placings.
Skaife’s decorated motor racing career spans over 25 years and includes six Bathurst 1000 victories, a record-equalling five Australian Touring Car Championships (ATCC) and the most ever V8 Supercar/ATCC race and round wins – a record previously held by the late Peter Brock until surpassed by Skaife in 2007.
