Round five of the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia was held at Sydney Motorsport Park – one of the hardest tracks on tyres in Australia, but the Michelin tyres again performed faultlessly.
This weekend it was the young drivers in the Championship that shone in the challenging conditions. After dominating the previous round in Townsville, winning all three races, it was young Nick Foster who again claimed the round win.
Behind the wheel of the Bob Jane T-Marts Porsche, Foster claimed the Round win with a race win and two second place finishes. Matt Campbell, the young rookie came into the weekend having never stood on the podium and walked away with two race wins and second place from the round.
Each driver has just two sets of the Michelin N2 tyres to run over the whole weekend, which includes qualifying and three 17 lap sprint races.
The racing was fierce with the racers in front pushing hard all weekend. This was made possible due to the long lasting, high performance nature of the Michelin tyre. This performance has been on show all season; from the heat and humidity of Townsville, to the very low track temperatures at Phillip Island, and this weekend was no different even with the abrasive nature of the track.
Round winner, Nick Foster, praised the performance of the Michelin tyres.
“We know this track is tough on tyres, but our racing was in no way compromised by the performance of our Michelin tyres. Of course we did see a bit of a drop off after the opening 5 or 6 laps, but we were still able to continue to push hard right through to the end of the race,” said Foster.
With reigning Champion and current leader Richards having a very difficult weekend, Foster capitalised and has closed the gap to just 90.5 points. Five time Porsche Champion, Craig Baird has proven once again that consistency is what counts in this series and currently sits just 28.5 points behind Richards. With plenty of points still on offer, the Championship is wide open going into the 6th of 8 round to be held at Sandown Raceway in just under three weeks time.
