Globally Michelin’s involvement with Carrera Cup is more than just supplying tyres; it is a technical partnership with designers from Michelin working closely with Porsche to develop a tyre that ensures the total performance of the cars on which it is fitted.
The arrival of the new Porsche GT3 Cup car saw Michelin develop a new tyre that will be run in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia in 2014 – designed to provide even greater durability and consistency.
Beyond boasting wider dimensions at both the front and rear (27/65-18 and 31/71-18 now, as opposed to 25/64-18 and 30/68-18 in the case of the 997), the new Michelin Cup N2 tyre was designed to match the demands of the German manufacturer in terms of durability and performance.
Engineers at Michelin Competition and the brand’s Technology Centre worked simultaneously on the newcomer’s construction and tread. The rubber compounds used in its composition are the direct product of endurance racing, ensuring greater durability and better consistency throughout a race distance.
At the heart of the company’s strategy is the philosophy of MICHELIN Total Performance. This is a strategy of developing tyres that deliver improvements across all areas of performance simultaneously.
For Michelin, racing is a technological laboratory at the service of innovation. After being tested in the extreme conditions of a race track, innovations that increase tread life, ensure sustainable tyre performance, improve safety and enhance energy efficiency are then used to develop Michelin passenger car tyres.
With a racing pedigree built on championship and race wins in motorsport categories across the globe, the Michelin name is synonymous with delivering quality motorsport products.
Michelin has tasted success in 24 Hour of Le Mans, the World Endurance Championship, and more locally Porsche Carrera Cup Australia. With an impressive record of 22 victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, including taking out a 16th consecutive victory in 2013, Michelin is a proven world leader.
