Newly crowned Porsche champion Jordan Love will conclude his record-setting 2017 season with a three-round initiation into the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship, starting this weekend at Sandown Raceway.
The 18-year-old last weekend secured the 2017 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia title in an impressive season, where he equalled the record for consecutive round wins (4) and eclipsed the previous benchmark for consecutive race wins (12).
Love now prepares to step into the ultra-competitive Carrera Cup championship for the Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast events while remaining with his championship winning team, Sonic Motor Racing Services.
“Making the move from GT3 Cup Challenge to Carrera Cup is hugely exciting and probably the biggest challenge of my motor racing career so far,” said Love.
“It has been a great season for me and to race as the second-ever Australian Porsche Junior has been an honour. The pathway that Porsche provides has been amazing for young drivers like me, especially for this coming weekend where I step into Carrera Cup having spent a season in a very similar 911 GT3 Cup race car.
“I tested at Sandown last week, which was my first time in the current Carrera Cup car. There were several things to get used to, including the paddle shift and brakes, but my 2011-spec GT3 Cup Challenge car and the 2014-spec Carrera Cup car share many of the same characteristics, which makes the transition a lot easier.
“While not yet confirmed, I’m hopeful to race in Carrera Cup next season. Should that happen then I’ll be better prepared having raced at the tail-end of the 2017 season.”
The Sandown round also marks the start of Carrera Cup’s Endurance Cup, which will see the championship hold one longer-distance race at each of the three final rounds at Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast. Love is no stranger to long distance Porsche races having won the 2017 Jim Richards Endurance Trophy – the long distance mini-series within GT3 Cup Challenge.
Love’s announcement follows the confirmation of GT3 Cup Challenge runner-up Brenton Grove into Carrera Cup for the Sandown and Gold Coast rounds.
