Phenix Motorsport is an exciting new Adelaide based race team contesting the 2014 Porsche Carrera Cup throughout Australia. Rising from the ashes of its previous incarnation as Birrana Racing, the new team has retained the expertise that led them to seven Australian Drivers Championships in the open wheel Formula Holden category during 1994 – 2001.
Phenix Motorsport Team Principal Malcolm Ramsay is himself a living legend of motorsport, having constructed and raced Birrana cars during the 70s before heading up Birrana Racing in the 90s. Malcolm explains…
“We’ve got a whole new challenge ahead of us with the tin top of Carrera Cup. We’ve opted for an old Latin spelling of Phenix to represent the rebirth of the team and give ourselves that extra little edge! We can’t wait to get amongst it in 2014.”
The one make Porsche Carrera Cup will be contested over eight rounds during 2014 with the first two rounds at the showcase Clipsal 500 Adelaide and Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix events. Round 3 is a special Pro-Am event at Phillip Island, with the remaining Rounds 4-8 taking place alongside the V8 Supercars at Townsville, Sydney Motorsport Park, Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast. Stepping into the cockpit of the completely brand new 991 GT3 Cup car will be Brenton Ramsay. The commercial helicopter pilot will be trading vertical lift for a paddle shift as he takes the competition up to his fellow Elite Category drivers during season 2014. After his first taste of the new Porsche at Eastern Creek in January Brenton is pumped about his new ride.
“This 991 GT3 Cup car is just awesome! The new model has around 460hp with a weight of around 1200kg, and the pneumatic paddle shift is just wicked. It’s a fully digital car, so I’m also really enjoying the systems and the incredible array of data coming out of the car. I’m like a kid in the candy shop.”
With a degree in Electronic Engineering it’s easy to see why Ramsay feels right at home in the cockpit, but there is still plenty to learn for the tin top Rookie.
“With all my previous racing experience in open wheelers I’m looking forward to learning the nuances of racing with a roof over my head!”
With test days scheduled for Winton and Mallala during February the Phenix Motorsport team is looking for plenty of miles pre Clipsal 500. Round 1 kicks off at the Clipsal 500 street circuit on Thursday 27th February with Practice. Friday is Qualifying, with Race 1 a twilight race that evening. Race 2 is on Saturday and Race 3 is set for Sunday March 2nd.
