Queensland speedster Shae Davies has strong ambition to revisit the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia podium as the championship embarks on its fourth round of 2013 in Townsville this weekend.
Carrera Cup’s last round at Sydney Motorsport Park in May turned the championship on its head when a new co-driver format teamed Professional Class and Elite Class drivers in each entry. The result: A selection of fresh faces on the Porsche podium.
This revised format not only ended a 10-straight podium streak of reigning champion Craig Baird, it also allowed Davies and his Elite Class co-driver Adam Gowans to take their maiden Professional Class round win.
The Rennsport success was a boost to Davies’ season and a feat the Gold Coast-based racer hopes to repeat at the North Queensland event.
“Rennsport was certainly a confidence booster for me, especially when I managed to pull a genuine gap on many of the Professional Class drivers at times. I think I’ve found some of the pace that I lacked in the first part of the season,” said Davies.
“I raced at Townsville in Formula Ford last year however it didn’t go to plan. Since then I’ve completed plenty of laps on the simulator and I’m confident of some strong results heading into Townsville this weekend.”
Davies was not the only first-time victor at Rennsport; Elite Class points leader Max Twigg claimed his maiden outright round win in Sydney and is now looking forward to the ‘excitement’ of the Townsville streets.
“Townsville has beautiful high kerbs and needs an aggressive style of driving. It’s an exciting track and competition is always close there. I’m certainly looking forward to going back there,” said Twigg.
Among the Carrera Cup regulars will be one championship newcomer – 2001 Porsche Cup champion and former Australian GT Championship category owner Martin Wagg will make his series debut, ending his nine-year motor racing sabbatical.
Porsche Carrera Cup Australia will be supported this round by Porsche Passion – an online portal offering an insight into the world of Porsche. Available at www.PorschePassion.com.au, the site features the latest news, articles, images, videos and upcoming events for the German marque.
Porsche Carrera Cup Australia will hold three 14-lap races over the three-day Townsville event, with both Race 1 and Race 3 to be broadcast live on the Seven Network.
