Alex Davison has taken his second race win in succession for the 2012 Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia season ahead of Kiwi rivals Craig Baird and Daniel Gaunt, while James Koundouris claimed his second Elite Class race win of the weekend.
Davison started the race alongside rookie Nick Foster, who led the race into the opening corner. However, Foster spun at Turn 5 on the opening lap, allowing Davison into the lead of the race, before pulling away from the field and ultimately taking the race win.
Baird, who started seventh on the grid, quickly came through the field into second position however, while the New Zealander had Davison in his sights, he was unable to challenge for the race lead by the finish of the 11 lap race.
Gaunt finished third, while 16-year-old Kiwi racer Andre Heimgartner and Tom Tweedie claimed fourth and fifth position respectively in their debut Carrera Cup round.
Matt Kingsley, who started from the rear of the grid, finished in sixth position with repeat Elite Class race winner James Koundouris in seventh position outright.
Davison will now start the final Carrera Cup race at the Clipsal 500 alongside reigning champion Baird, and was delighted with his second straight victory upon his Carrera Cup return.
“With Richards and Baird starting back a few spots I expected to be able to get out in front. I had a terrible start and Nick Foster led early, but unfortunately for him he spun on the first lap allowing me to pull away a bit,” said Davison.
“I’m rapt to have two race wins. We improved the car for that race, which was great. I’m not entirely satisfied with my own performance even though we’ve had a couple of wins, so I’ll try hard to make myself stronger so we can fight hard for the rest of the year.”
Meanwhile, Baird will aim for victory in the final race of the weekend after suffering a slow puncture in Friday’s twilight race, finishing seventh and moving through the field to finish second position in today’s Race 2.
“Everyone has a bad race and we were lucky to finish seventh, which put us in a position to finish second today. We’ve got a fresh set of tyres now so we’ll put them on the see how we go tomorrow,” said Baird.
Meanwhile, Elite Class driver James Koundouris has taken his second class win of the weekend, finishing ahead of Max Twigg, Tony Bates and Foster, who recovered to finish 10th.
“That race wasn’t too bad at all. The car was quite loose at first but after that it was quite good. I think the track conditions have changed a little bit so we’ll adjust the car accordingly. I’m now confident for tomorrow,” said Koundouris.
The final race of the opening round of the 2012 Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia season will be held on Sunday March 04.
