Two-car Porsche team Copyworld Racing plans to continue its strong start to 2015 despite a mid-season driver change.
Michael Almond started his second Porsche Carrera Cup Australia season strongly while Cam McConville made an impressive start to his Carrera Cup career, sitting second in the standings before the final Pro-Am race at Phillip Island.
McConville will now step aside from his racing role at Townsville to oversee the inaugural Australian Formula 4 Championship, opening the door for racer John Martin for the remaining five rounds.
The team’s main driver, Almond, is excited to bring Martin’s overseas racing experience after a positive start to 2015 alongside McConville.
“We’re all looking forward to Townsville. Apart from the obvious – it’s an amazing place – it will be great having John as part of Copyworld Racing. He brings great international experience and a lot of external interest to the team and to the championship. Hopefully we can help each other for the coming rounds,” said Almond.
“Cam has been a great inclusion to the team. He has been a great mentor to me on track and added a high level of experience and professionalism to Copyworld Racing, which has been vital for our development.”
McConville is disappointed to leave the championship mid-season but has been pleased with his immediate pace in the Porsche.
“It has been great racing full-time again and I’ve enjoyed every moment with the Copyworld Racing team. My day-to-day role is now my immediate focus, which is to launch the Australian Formula 4 Championship at Townsville,” said McConville.
“Being back behind the wheel this season has been a truly great experience; the championship is strong and we’ve been happy with our results so early in the season. Add to that my mentor role with Michael, which has allowed him to further develop as a driver. Good luck to Michael, John and the team for Townsville and for the remainder of the season.”
McConville achieved five top five results from eight races with a personal best of second place at Albert Park.
Porsche Carrera Cup Australia’s next round will be held at Townsville on July 10-12, 2015, with a 21 car field set for the Far North Queensland round.
